(29 Apr 2016) LEAD IN: A new UK-based tech company is attempting to make the often luxurious and glitzy world of private aviation accessible to mainstream travellers. Stratajet developed a high-tech price comparison website which gathers details and prices on private jets in seconds, rather than requiring potential customers or brokers to manually gather that information. STORY-LINE: When booking a holiday trip, many travellers would expect hiring one of these private jets to be way out of their price range. Not so, according to Jonny Nicol, the founder and CEO of UK-based tech company Stratajet and former pilot. He spent five years developing the algorithms required to deliver what he describes as a "game-changer": Stratajet's private aviation price comparison website. "It's exac...

  • Travelling from Nashville, USA to Manchester, UK

The trip home to the UK involved flying from Nashville to Washington D.C, then onto Manchester. Nashville airport is quite small and compact for an international airport, though it is easy to reach and not an expensive taxi ride from the city ($24 fixed cost). As with other major carriers in the United States our domestic flight between Nashville (BNA) and Washington Dulles (IAD) was on a small regional jet (Bombardier CRJ700) which while painted in United Express livery, was operated by Mesa Airlines. The same was true of the Embraer E-Jet used on inbound leg. The CRJ700 appeared to be quite old and tired since the internal window pain was scratched and crazed to the point of making everything outside look misty. Likewise there was a trapped bug between the inner and middle pane. Despite...

  • 70 years of UK air traffic

Based on independent historical research, flight records and CAA archive material, this visualisation charts the history of the UK’s skies from the 1950s to the present day. From the dawn of the jet-era and Concorde through to the advent of the low cost airlines and the modern age of mass air travel, it catalogues the incredible success story of UK commercial aviation, but also starkly illustrates how the structure of UK airspace has had to evolve – and sometimes struggled - to keep pace with ever growing traffic levels. Now, with over 3 million flights a year expected in the UK by 2030, the design of UK airspace is in urgent need of modernisation.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar urged people to stay indoors until the storm passed. Tens of thousands of homes were without power and the military was placed on standby. Some hurricane-force gusts were reported 30 years to the day after a weather event dubbed the "Great Storm of 1987" battered southern England. "It is a very dangerous storm," Varadkar said. "The last time there was a storm this severe, 11 lives were lost," he added, referring to Hurricane Debbie, which hit Ireland in 1961. Although Ophelia has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, Ireland's National Emergency Coordination Group on Severe Weather warned that the storm is still "unprecedented, with serious life-threatening conditions." Ireland's weather service, Met Eireann, described the storm as the most powerful on record to have ever been this far east in the Atlantic. Forecasters warned of flying debris, such as tiles blown from roofs. Large waves around coastal districts tossed sand and rocks onto coastal roads, seafronts and properties. Wind warnings were in place for Northern Ireland, parts of Wales and western parts of England. Planes were grounded at several locations in the British Isles. Some 130 flights were cancelled at Dublin Airport, while flights were also grounded at Manchester Airport. Both Ryanair and Easy Jet cancelled flights at Belfast International Airport, with more cancellations expected. Several flights to British airports were also diverted because of unusual odors on board thought to be associated with the remnants of the storm. Authorities warned anyone with travel plans to contact their airline. In parts of the United Kingdom and in France's Brittany region, the sky turned an eerie color as Ophelia's winds carried a mix of sand from the Sahara and particles from forest fires in Spain and Portugal. On social media, people posted pictures of London landmarks against yellow-orange skies. A non-profit group that provides lifesaving services around the British Isles warned people to stay away from seas and beaches. Matt Crofts, lifesaving manager for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, said coastal waters are "particularly dangerous and unpredictable, with large waves and swells being a major risk." As tempting as it is to watch crashing surf, it isn't worth the risk of being struck by large waves that can easily knock weather watchers off their feet, Crofts said. "The sea is far more powerful than you think and your chances of survival are slim if you are dragged into the swell," he said. And there is more to come Tuesday. Flights and ferries were cancelled in parts of Scotland. The government of Ireland said schools and colleges would remain closed, and Northern Ireland's Education Authority said the same. As the storm moved toward Northern Ireland, workers sealed off the Peace Bridge in Londonderry with tape and sandbags, closing it as a precautionary measure.

This is the moment a British inventor set the first world speed record for "flying a body-controlled jet engine power suit". Richard Browning set the record over Lagoona Park in Reading on Thursday, November 9. He reached a speed of 32.02 mph (51.53 km/h) on his third and final timed attempt before dropping into the lake, according to the Guinness World Records. An adjudicator was on hand to verify the achievement and make sure that the speed was measured accurately over a minimum distance of… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2017/11/09/watch-british-inventor-sets-jet-suit-world-record What are the top stories today? "It's exactly the same way as you would interact with Skyscanner or KAYAK or anything aviation-based price comparison sites," explains Nicol. "It has a few differences, you can go postcode to postcode, not just airport to airport. "But at its heart, you say where you want to go, when you want to go, and it will give you a range of options of different aircraft - some like this one - and it will give you as price, you pay it and away you go." A number of private aviation flights are currently manually handled and calculated by brokers. Stratajet's search engine computes the vast number of variables, including taxes, landing and handling fees, in around ten seconds. A number of logistics, including whether aircraft of particular size can use certain airfields, are also considered. It then delivers a list of flight options, similar in appearance to many flight price comparison websites. Nicol claims that by also allowing travellers to search so-called "empty leg flights" - meaning empty private jet flights without any passengers on board - Stratajet is able to offer journeys at a reduced cost. "What we're able to do is make it accessible right now to everybody," he says. "There is obviously a question over cost and by increasing utilisation, by decreasing empty legs - and empty legs are literally just burning fuel for the sake of it - and by using those to move people around, we're able to across the board to not just make it cheaper for the super wealthy to fly privately, but far more importantly, make it possible for your mainstay traveller to fly privately as well." To demonstrate how Stratajet's technology can be used, the Associated Press attended a media trip from near London, UK to the west of Ireland. Passengers flew from Luton Airport, around 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of central London, to Ireland West Airport Knock, around 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Galway in Ireland. The flight took around 75 minutes. In the space of a few hours, passengers visited Ashford Castle, a luxury hotel in County Mayo, and hopped on board a private boat trip along the picturesque shores of Lake Lough Corrib. Nicol says that by using private aviation, travellers can access a new level of freedom. "We left when we were ready to leave, we flew back when we were ready to fly back," he says. "We weren't beholden to a schedule of an airline, and that is one of the intangibles because we got control of our lives back and I think that's really what Stratajet is all about, it's about freedom of being able to travel without putting our lives in the control of other agencies when we do that." Stratajet joins a collection of online private aviation tools, including Netjets and Jetsmarter. According to Sean Tipton, media relations manager at the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), growing wealth is pushing the private aviation industry to new heights. "At the very top stratum of society, there are people doing very well," he says. Produced by British Airways Film Unit, the 1976 TRANSATLANTIC SUPERSONIC is a promotional film for British Airways’ commercial transatlantic flights on the supersonic Concorde jet. The film follows several men and one woman as they depart various locations (Germany, Bahrain, Scotland, and Paris) to travel to the U.S. via Heathrow Airport. The use of British Airways’ supersonic Concorde jet allows these passengers to cross the Atlantic in just over 3.5 hours. The Concorde lands (02:25) in London at Heathrow International Airport, where it waits for passengers to board it before flying to the U.S. The passengers board the Concorde, Flight 579, and enjoy the “club-like” cabin as the jet (08:50) and the flight deck crew (09:21) prepare to depart. The Concorde takes off (09:50) from Heathrow and flies through the sky (10:37) while passengers enjoy the high-end cabin services (10:56). Twenty minutes out of London, the Concorde prepares to reach supersonic speed (12:30); the smooth transition is hardly noticed by the passengers as they Concorde climbs up to its cruising altitude of 57,000 feet (13:18). The jet reaches speeds twice the speed of sound (14:33), before decelerating as it prepares to land at Dulles International Airport (15:53). The Concorde lands (16:31) in just over 3.5 hours, having covered 3,780 miles. Mobile lounges greet the jet (17:05) and take the passengers to the terminal. The film concludes by briefly following the featured passengers on their way to their respective destinations while touting the possibilities created by halving the time it takes to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. The Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde is a British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger jet airliner that was operated until 2003. It had a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04 (1,354 mph or 2,180 km/h at cruise altitude), with seating for 92 to 128 passengers. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued flying for the next 27 years. It is one of only two supersonic transports to have been operated commercially; the other is the Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-144, which was operated for a much shorter period. Concorde was jointly developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) under an Anglo-French treaty. Twenty aircraft were built, including six prototypes and development aircraft. Air France (AF) and British Airways (BA) were the only airlines to purchase and fly Concorde. The aircraft was used mainly by wealthy passengers who could afford to pay a high price in exchange for Concorde's speed and luxury service. Despite the aircraft appearing old and worn, the service was good, though I would definetely prefer the E-Jet as the CRJ700 was a lot lounder; owing to the fact that we were sat in the last row, just in front of the engines. Upon arrival in Washington, we didn't have to collect our checked bags this time, as they were being transfered to the Manchester flight. The 3 hour wait at Washington gave some time to have a meal and stock up on some reading material for the flight ahead. We were delayed slightly as the inbound flight from Manchester was late arriving, but it was turned around quite quickly. Our flight from Washington to Manchester was onboard a Boeing 757-200 operated by United Airlines. Again this aircraft seemed to be quite old and dated, which is not surprising given that the newest and best aircraft would be operated to the main UK routes within London as opposed to Manchester. There were a few issues with the IFE (In-Flight Entertainment) which at about 2 hours into the flight led to the system being rebooted. The flight was uneventful and smooth with barely any turbulence while over the Atlantic; we made good time to Manchester owing to the strong West-to-East jet stream that exists over the Atlantic. The descent was started as we flew over the East coast of Ireland, which once we broke through the cloud layers led to some dawn views of the North Wales coastline. We arrived at Manchester on time despite the delayed departure from Washington. Overall it was a good experience and definetly a good way to save costs for a flight to the US. As this trip was for business the flights were booked at quite short notice (1 week before departure) which led to me having to minimise cost. The return flight from Manchester to Nashville was approximately half the price of doing the same journey from a London airport. Likewise the transit times in Washington were reasonable, since some of the London options involved either short transits (less than 1 hour which would problematic if the first flight is delayed) or very long transits (Over 6 hours). If on a budget, I would fly from Manchester again.

Heathrow Airport is one of the 2 main airports serving London, England, UK. It is in Hillingdon, West London, 22 km / 14 miles west of Central London. Other airports in the London area are Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City Airport, and London Southend Airport. Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK and Europe, and one of the busiest in the world. It is connected to Central London by rail and bus. The cheapest (but not always fastest or most comfortable) way to get to or from Heathrow is on the Piccadilly Line of the London Underground. It can take almost an hour to travel between Central London and Heathrow. Discover The World From High Above http://www.youtube.com/AERIALDISCOVERY Flying Through The Worlds Busiest Airspace - Truly Amazing If ever there was a way to graphically highlight the need for high-speed rail in Europe, this is it. The BBC in Europe reported some very interesting graphics representing global flight paths. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-22657086). Michael Markieta, a transportation planner at global engineering and design firm Arup, has spent the past year developing visualisations of flight paths crossing the globe. Europe has the world's most crowed airspace with a concentration of major cities and airport hubs. The busiest European airport is Frankfurt International, which has 235 direct flight destinations (Based on data from openflights.org). Eastern United States has some of the business airspace with is proximity to Europe and with the region also supporting major commercial hubs like Boston, New York and Washington. It is easy to think that rail often competes with air on short haul routes, and largely it does however there is another angle here. One of the 'industry wide' benefits rail travel provides as an alternative to short-haul air is freeing up airport capacity for airlines to take advantage of their airport slots for more profitable long-haul flights. We have actually seen signs of this already with airlines working with rail carriers, possibly even code sharing, moving their short-haul passengers by rail where it makes sense. I wonder when the airlines will more aggressively start competing in the rail space, operating high-speed trains to optimise their profitability by shifting demand between air and rail, and expanding their networks by selling many more secondary destinations. This doesn't even touch on the positive effect train travel has on the environment if we could halve that short-haul air traffic! Air travel plays a crucial role in supporting economic growth and prosperity, particularly for an island nation like the UK. Flying is an essential part of modern life. But despite the fact we all take it for granted that we can fly off on holiday whenever we want, we then get upset by the noise of aircraft over our homes! The fact is that southern England is some of the busiest airspace in the world and there isn't anywhere that isn't already overflown. But we can make it better, and quieter for people on the ground, thanks to new technology. This first stage addresses changes to the airspace supporting Gatwick Airport from ground level up, and to the airspace supporting London City above 4,000ft. Later stages will address proposals for airspace supporting other parts of the London airports network, to be complete by 2020. A spectacular new video released by NATS, Britain's air traffic controller, reveals just how busy our skies really are on a daily basis. In order to make the video, NATS have compiled real flight data showing the air traffic which flies on a typical summer day and highlights the intensity of the operation in Europe. Although the UK is the main focus of the video, both UK and European flight plan information over 2 months was used to clearly highlight the structure of airspace across the continent. with Heathrow being the busiest international airport in Europe. dji phantom 2 vision plus ipad ground station btu test review airspace busy flight airplane flying air aircraft 2014 london "london england" uk "united kingdom" england british britain boeing "private jet" jet travel heathrow "heathrow airport" holiday vacation "summer holiday" summer winter amazing raw footage video camera discovery europe "european union" france germany "great britain" "cheap flight" hotel "1st class" "business class" ticket transport trending entertainment trendy viral "aerial discovery" gopro hero 3 black amazing prank vitalized tv For the most part, the extremely detailed choreography that goes on above our heads on a daily basis, guiding thousands of people across the globe, goes unnoticed. It is for this reason that the visualisation was created, to inform people of the massive amount of work that is being done to ensure that the world stays connected. NATS highlight the North Atlantic tracks that connect Europe with North America, as well as the clearly visible holding stacks around London's capacity stretched airports. Another interesting feature to notice are the military manoeuvres off Anglesey in Wales. In a statement on their blog, NATS say "Airspace might be the invisible infrastructure, but it is every bit as important as the road, rail and utility networks we all rely on everyday." Some amazing stats provided by NATS: On a typical July day there are around 30,000 flights across European airspace

During the flight back to Andrews Air Force Base, Johnson made several phone calls on the radio telephone, including to Rose Kennedy (JFK's mother) and Nellie Connally (wife of John Connally). In addition, he made the decision to request all cabinet members to stay in their posts and asked to meet both parties' leaders in Congress soon. Johnson also asked Jack Valenti, Bill Moyers, and Liz Carpenter to write a brief statement for him to read on the day's events, which he then edited slightly himself. At 6:10 pm, after landing at Andrews amid a crowd of Congressional leaders, he walked to an already prepared set of microphones and began his first public statement as president: This is a sad time for all people. We have suffered a loss that cannot be weighed. For me, it is a deep personal tragedy. I know that the world shares the sorrow that Mrs. Kennedy and her family bear. I will do my best. That is all I can do. I ask for your help--and God's. Afterwards Johnson was said to have regretted delivering the remarks, believing he sounded harsh and strident. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_inauguration_of_Lyndon_B._Johnson Under John F. Kennedy presidential air travel officially entered the jet age.[17] He had used the Eisenhower-era jets for trips to Canada, France, Austria and the United Kingdom.[18] However, in October 1962, the administration purchased a Boeing C-137 Stratoliner, a modified long-range 707Special Air Mission (SAM) 26000.[19] The Air Force had attempted a special presidential livery of their own design: a scheme in red and metallic gold, with the nation's name in block letters. Kennedy felt the aircraft appeared too regal, and, on advice from his wife, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, he contacted the French-born American industrial designer Raymond Loewy for help in designing a new livery and interiors for the VC-137 jet.[2] Loewy met with the president, and his earliest research on the project took him to the National Archives, where he looked at the first printed copy of the United States Declaration of Independence, and saw the country's name set widely spaced and in upper case in a typeface called Caslon. He chose to expose the polished aluminum fuselage on the bottom side, and used two blues; a slate-blue associated with the early republic and the presidency, and a more contemporary cyan to represent the present and future. The presidential seal was added to both sides of the fuselage near the nose, a large American flag was painted on the tail, and the sides of the aircraft read "United States of America" in all capital letters. Loewy's work won immediate praise from the president and the press. The VC-137 markings were adapted for the larger VC-25 when it entered service in 1990.[20] SAM 26000 was in service from 1962 to 1998, serving Presidents Kennedy to Clinton. On 22 November 1963, SAM 26000 carried President Kennedy to Dallas, Texas, where it served as the backdrop as the Kennedys greeted well-wishers at Dallas' Love Field. Later that afternoon, Kennedy was assassinated, and Vice President Lyndon Johnson assumed the office of president and took the oath of office aboard SAM 26000. At Johnson's request, the plane carried Kennedy's body back to Washington.[21] A decade later, SAM 26000 brought Johnson's own body home to Texas after his state funeral in Washington.[22][23] President Lyndon B. Johnson used SAM 26000 to travel extensively domestically, and used it to visit troops in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. SAM 26000 served President Nixon on several groundbreaking overseas voyages, including his famous visit to the People's Republic of China in February 1972 and trip to the Soviet Union later that year, both firsts for an American president.[24] Nixon dubbed the plane the "Spirit of '76" in honor of the upcoming bicentennial of the United States, and that logo was painted on both sides of the plane's nose.[25] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_One

Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso. Contact was lost about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the airline is quoted by Algeria's state news agency as saying. The passenger airliner, last seen at 0155 GMT, was bound for the Algerian capital Algiers, it added. Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said. "In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials, quoted by APS news agency, said. The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair. In a statement (in Spanish), Swiftair said that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The plane was originally scheduled to land at 0510 local time, it said. Flight AH 5017 flies the Ouagadougou-Algiers route four times a week, AFP news agency reported. Farnborough (United Kingdom) (AFP) - European planemaker Airbus on Monday launched the eagerly-awaited upgrade of its long-haul A330 passenger jet -- the A330neo -- to meet rising demand for cheaper, more fuel-efficient travel. ALC has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to be the launch customer of the Airbus A330-900neo by buying 25 of the wide-body aircraft. Together the deals are worth a potential $14.1 billion (10.3 billion euros). #greatnetwork Google+: https://goo.gl/Vh1MdB Facebook: https://goo.gl/2NOVnH Disclaimers: Intro song: Disco Sting, by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Outro song: Overcast, by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 In video song: Crimson Fly, by Huna-Huna (youtube media library)
